THE POTENIAL ROLE OF INNATE IMMUNITY IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF POST-OPERATIVE ADHESIONSbyJENNELL WHITEDecember 2011Advisor: Ghassan SaedMajor: PhysiologyDegree: Doctor of PhilosophyPost-operative adhesion development occurs in the vast majority of patients followingabdominal surgery and is a natural occurrence of peritoneal-wound healing. These fibrous bandsmay form within the first 5-7 days post-surgery and have the ability to cause a distortion in thenormal anatomical positioning of abdominal organs. Consequently, adhesions are majorcontributors to small bowel obstruction, infertility, and severe pelvic and abdominal pain.Physiological processes responsible for adhesion formation remain obscure though it is believedto involve cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation of several cell types includingmesothelial cells, fibroblasts, and inflammatory and immune cells. Substances released fromthese cells regulate fibrinolytic activity, tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrixturnover, processes that are known to be central to the development of adhesions. Our long-termgoal is to prevent or selectively limit the development of post-operative adhesions. The objectiveof this study is to determine the role that macrophages play in the development of post-operativeadhesions. Our central hypothesis states that surgical-induced hypoxia triggers a pro-inflammatory signal, leading to the activation and recruitment of resident and infiltratingmacrophages, which contribute to the development of the adhesion phenotype. This hypothesis

Genome-wide computational prediction of miRNAs in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) revealed target genes involved in pulmonary vasculature and antiviral innate immunity

The current outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)in China threatened humankind worldwide. The coronaviruses contains the largest RNA genome among all other known RNA viruses, therefore the disease etiology can be understood by analyzing the genome sequence of SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we used an ab-intio based computational tool VMir to scan the complete geno...

Evaluation of topical application of honey in prevention of post-operative peritoneal adhesion formation in dogs

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of topical administration of honey in prevention of or reduction in post-surgical peritoneal adhesions in dog. The study was conducted on 18 adultfemale mixed-breed dogs with a mean ± SD weight of 20 ± 4.25 kg. A standardized surgical trauma (serosaltrauma model) was made in the dogs’ descending colon to induce adhesion formation. T...

The innate immunity changes of the female anadromous hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha , during spawning and post spawning season

Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton) is a valuable migratory fish belonging to the family Clupeidae and it is distributed in a wide area from the Persian Gulf to coasts of Pakistan and China’s southern sea. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes occurring in innate immunity parameters during upstream migration and comparing them to those during post spawning. Sixty mature female hil...
